![]() ![]() Of course there are quest/story-related consequences, but isn’t that partly what makes a great RPG? It’s simply treated like any other decision in the game a legitimate option for dealing with a situation, if you’re prepared to face the consequences. You can literally kill everyone on every planet without breaking the game. When a quest NPC dies, the game takes this into account and ties it into the story of that quest, allowing you to continue on without that NPC. I think there’s a much better (albeit far more complex) design solution to this:įor example, the Outer Worlds. In my (unpopular) opinion, the lowest effort way to solve the problem of breaking quests is to make some NPCs invulnerable, but I think even Bethesda would agree this is far from ideal because it limits player freedom in an artificial way. To assume I have some weird perverse agenda to play with is just completely wrong. Oblivion and above added this feature not because they wanted to restrict players from going on a killing spree, but because they wanted to make the games more accessible to players without hitting hard limits to stop progress(as stated in an early Oblivion interview). There are also large numbers of characters who are inherently evil, dangerous or a concern to the world but you don't get to decide as a player how to handle those situations until it decides you can. ![]() The game decides who's important and that's a negative to my story. ![]() You also know which characters are relevant to the story before the story even occurs for example like Oblivion, because they have a different icon when you highlight over them. It's not very strong on a roleplay front when there are characters who can't get caught in friendly fire, who can't fail, who always best you if you turn on them(like pickpocket or commit crime in front of them). The freedom of Bethesda games ( to me as I feel I have to clarify) are spontaneous unwritten events. Important characters can't have any role in the story other than immortal story carriers until the game decides they are no longer immortal.
